WEEKLY SUMMARY OF HONG KONG PRESS REPORTS AND COMMENTS.
July 27 - August 2, 1947.
1. CHINA.
In connection with the visit of General Wedemeyer the Wah Kiu Yat Po of July 28 again warned against the danger of China "falling into the arms of the U. S. and becoming a spearhead against Russia", whilst admitting that China needs American economic aid.
General Wedemeyer was reported on July 30 as having conferred with Democratic League and other left-wing politicians (Kung Sheung Daily News), and there was speculation as to whether he would urge the formation of a coalition government (Wah Kiu Yat Po of July 31).
The seizure by the Chinese Customs authorities in Canton of the Hong Kong steamer "Fatshan", on which an enormous quantity of smuggled cargo was said to have been discovered, was prominently featured as illustrating the extent of smuggling between Hong Kong and China.
There was some speculation as to possible measures for the stabi- lization of Chinese currency. A return to the silver standard was mentioned
(Wah Kiu Yat Po of July 31).

HONG KONG.
It was reported that the Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants Asso- ciation was planning a demonstration to show its dissatisfaction with the new scale of high cost of living allowances (Wah Kiu Yat Po of July 29).
The Kung Sheung Daily News of August 1 expressed concern over the prevalence of juvenile crime in Hong Kong and urged compulsory education, with free meals and medical attention.
